• Al Merrikh 1-0 Express Aggregate (2-2)
Express FC withdrew from the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League with a narrow 1-0 loss to Sudanese Al Merrikh in the second leg of the first preliminary round at Al Ubayyid Stadium – Shikan Castle on Sunday .
Ahmed Hamid Al-Tash scored the invaluable goal in the 73rd minute. He received a defensive pass from Bakri Al-Madina to send a low blow beyond the reach of Joel Mutakubwa, sending the local crowd into crazy celebrations.
The return leg at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende ended 2-1 in favor of the Red Eagles, who have now been kicked out of the competition due to the away goals rule despite a 2-2 draw on aggregate .
Express Mutakubwa goalkeeper had previously refused Ahmed Adam while Isaac Abdelrahman shot over the bar so both sides could enter the locker room with a goalless score.
Robust forward Godfrey Lwesibawa was taken out in the first half injured, Martin Kizza’s attempt was too weak to cause a harvok, Eric Kambale was pocketed as substitute George Ssenkaba shot aside.
El-Merrikh will face Zanaco Zanaco in the second preliminary round as the Express return home for the Uganda Cup semi-final against BUL FC on Thursday.
