OCEAN CITY, Maryland – A child was rescued by a bystander after being thrown from a vehicle and in a Maryland bay on Sunday afternoon in a bridge crash, firefighters said.
The child was in a vehicle that rolled over the railing of the Route 90 bridge over Assawoman Bay, the Ocean City Fire Department said in a Facebook post.
“A Good Samaritan immediately jumped over the railing and into the bay, saving the baby,” firefighters said.
First responders were called to the scene just before 3 p.m. and found a vehicle hanging over the side of the bridge, firefighters said. Four vehicles were involved, the Maryland Department of Transportation said.
At least eight people were injured, firefighters said.
Firefighters secured the vehicle, while paramedics treated several patients. Seven patients were taken to various hospitals, while the pediatric patient was airlifted to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, according to firefighters.
None of the victims were immediately identified and authorities did not say what they believed caused the crash.
