Say what you want about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and there’s plenty to say, she’s a woman with a steel spine and a laser focus on history – both the past centuries and the countless pages to write.
While it was shocking and seemingly unprecedented that she rejected two of Parliamentary Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s choices for the select committee that will investigate the Jan.6 attack on the Capitol, it probably shouldn’t have been. being. Pelosi is not interested in a show of dogs and ponies, distractions that will give endless fodder to the conservative media and undermine the seriousness of the task before this panel.
A speaker who has led two impeachments, painful proceedings that exposed blatant infractions of President Donald Trump without however removing him from office, knows exactly what would happen if she gave a platform to Republican Representatives Jim Jordan and Jim Banks.
Ally with Trump no matter what
Both voted to oppose the state-certified election results – even though the Justice Department and dozens of courts found the objections unfounded, and even after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, wounded dozens of police officers, threatened Pelosi and Vice. President Mike Pence and resulted in the deaths of five people – including a Capitol Hill police officer and a protester shot dead by a police officer as she walked through a glass door into an area where lawmakers were taking cover.
Banks and Jordan showed us who they are.
Banks recently met Trump twice, most notably on a trip to the southern border. “I will never be ashamed to say that Donald Trump is the most effective president of my life,” he said this month at the Conservative Political Action Conference, where his topic was “grievances against the government “.
After being appointed to the select committee on Monday, Banks said he should also investigate “hundreds of violent political riots” last summer and added: “Nancy Pelosi created this committee only to slander the Tories and justify the authoritarian agenda of the left “. When she rejected her appointment on Wednesday, he invoked her service in Afghanistan and added: “We have always said this was a purely partisan exercise on the part of the Democrats and Nancy Pelosi’s rejection at my respect and Jim Jordan shows once again that she is the most partisan figure in America today. “
So, face I win, face you lose.
Mark it on the calendar:January 6, 2025 could be the date of the death of American democracy
Jordan has been such a zealous supporter of Trump and his 2020 “victory” that five days after the insurgency on Capitol Hill, Trump presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The next day Jordan was in the House defending Trump and lambasting Democrats for impeaching him – again – “eight days before there was a peaceful transfer of power, as there was.” every other time in American history ”. Except that by then, for the first time in US history, the transfer had already been marked by violence, vandalism and death.
Former Speaker of the House John Boehner called his fellow Republican in Ohio a “legislative terrorist.” This is undoubtedly why McCarthy chose him and why Pelosi called for handing over short-term ammunition to the GOP in exchange for a long-term all-time record that wasn’t derailed by conservative media and what-aboutism. .
McCarthy does not want to name any replacements. He threatens to remove the three choices Pelosi accepted.
Personal testimonies and violent video
The GOP will make the hay for whatever happens, or try to do it. Before a witness testifies or a conclusion is drawn, as we see, Banks and many others characterize the working committee project as partisan hacking. We can only hope that the truth and the facts, reinforced by numerous personal testimonies and violent videos, will raise the scales in American eyes and produce a collective revelation about where we have been and where we want to go as a nation.
Responsible Democrats and Republicans must dig deep into what happened on January 6. We need a definitive account of the events of that day, who was behind them and how the government and all its protectors could have allowed thousands of people to enter the famous building. this not only symbolizes but is in fact the beating democratic heart of the United States of America. We need to understand the roles of Trump, the Pentagon, the Proud Boys and other groups, and why the hell people would say things like what Saundra Kiczenski said to Wall Street Journal reporter Michael C. Bender: “We don’t We weren’t there to steal things. We weren’t there to wreak havoc. We were just there to overthrow the government. “
Clean the air, find the facts:The defeat of the Commission on January 6 foreshadows dangerous failures in the vote and the elections
As U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss said on Tuesday in handing down the first sentence for a Jan.6 felony, the flag Paul Hodgkins carried on Senate floor after invading the Capitol was not an American flag. It was a Trump 2020 flag – an unmistakable symbol of Hodgkins “declaring his loyalty to one individual on the nation,” Moss said. “In that act, he captured the threat to democracy that we all witnessed that day.”
Pelosi is right to save these procedures. We need to know what to do to make sure that nothing like January 6 can happen again.
