The Chicago Bulls are committed to head coach Billy Donovan. In an unannounced move at the time, the Bulls signed Donovan to a contract extension before the start of the 2022-23 NBA season, according to Shams Charania. Donovan had two years left on his contract after the 21-22 campaign – in which he led the Bulls to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons – and he is now under contract in Chicago for several more seasons.

Donovan is in his third season as Bulls head coach, and he’s compiled an 86-88 overall record in Chicago so far. Chicago missed the playoffs completely in Donovan’s first season after finishing with a 31-41 record, and they were eliminated in the first round last season after finishing sixth in the East with a 46- 36. In 20 games this season, they sit 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 9-11 record.

Prior to his stint in Chicago, Donovan was head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2015 to 2020 and head coach of the University of Florida from 1996 to 2015, where he won two national titles. He led the Thunder to the Western Conference Finals in his first season with the team, but hasn’t been able to get past the first round since. That may change this season.

The decision to extend Donovan before the season seems a little odd considering he still had two years left on his contract. They could have easily waited until the next offseason before doing so to see how the team fared this season. It’s equally strange not to announce that you have signed a contract extension with your head coach. Nonetheless, Donovan will continue to call shots from the sidelines in Chicago for the foreseeable future.
