Phil McKenzie, COO Goldfinch, tell us: “Goldfinch continues to actively invest in the future of the UK and global independent film industry and operates across a number of business sectors. However, like most businesses, some businesses are simply more successful than others. Birdbox Distribution Ltd and birdbox.film were just start-ups within the Goldfinch group and like many companies of this type, unfortunately, and after a few difficult years, they are no longer viable and have ceased to trade.
According to Companies House, Bird Box Distribution (BBD) has run up debts of £363,227. Much of this debt was a loan owed to a young London-based Russian entrepreneur who was one of the subsidiary’s directors.
BBD has already released at least two films in theaters: thriller Anonymous killers with Gary Oldman and musical doc Ronnie’sabout Ronnie Scott’s iconic jazz club in London.
We’ve been told that Goldfinch’s talent management agency, The Koop, which was first announced two years ago, remains in business despite its website still under construction.
Goldfinch announced last week hell in heaven, a documentary series and podcast based on the death of Wall Street millionaire John Bender in his Costa Rican jungle mansion. The projects are the first fruits of Goldfinch’s non-fiction IP incubator called Selectors.
Projects Goldfinch has worked on include Sadie Frost-directed doc Amountphoto by Kelsey Grammer Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookstore (pictured) and World War II drama Waiting for Anya. In production are documentaries Do not forget me, on rock star Eddie Cochran and Lena Headey’s directorial debut The trapwhich is due to shoot later this year.
Screen was the first to report the news of the closures.
