Gareth Southgate has named Ivan Toney in his England squad to face Germany on Monday night, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is absent.
Five players are to be left out of the 23-man matchday squad for the Nations League clash at Wembley – which is live on talkSPORT.
Those five are Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold as well as Fikayo Tomori, Jarrod Bowen, James Ward-Prowse and Jack Grealish, who is suspended.
Alexander-Arnold didn’t take to the pitch in the 1-0 loss to Italy, meaning he won’t have played a role during the international break.
The same goes for West Ham striker Bowen, Southampton midfielder Ward-Prose and AC Milan defender Tomori, who were all unused substitutes on Friday.
Grealish played the final 19 minutes against Italy after coming on for Bukayo Saka, who was playing at left-back but picked up a booking which rules him out of the match at Wembley on Monday night.
Reacting to the team news, Everton winger Andros Townsend told talkSPORT: “It’s obviously a surprise. When you’re missing an attacking threat, it’s obvious that Trent Alexander-Arnold is probably the one of the best ball deliverers in world football.
” It is a surprise. If Ivan Toney is to be in the squad then someone must be missing, unfortunately it looks like it’s Trent this time.
“You get your chance every day in training. Yes, in an ideal world you want to see Ivan Toney in the game but you get a week of training, you still get a whole week of him training against your first team defenders or your second choice.
“It doesn’t always have to be in a game situation.”
For Toney, it will be an opportunity to make his England debut after being left out of the squad to face Italy.
Southgate, however, did not commit to giving the Brentford striker time on the pitch when he faced the media on Sunday.
He said: “Above all, it was great for him to be with us and see how we work.
“Of course everyone wants to come into the team and on the pitch, but you’re more likely to do well when you’ve been here longer, used to the way we play and comfortable with other players. .
“I think whatever happens tomorrow [Monday]it was a useful exercise for him and for us.
“I remember I was in the stands for the first two international camps, they were a bit shorter, so that’s how Terry Venables got me into the squad.
“Sometimes we did it that way, sometimes we didn’t. I understand the push because we are so close to a World Cup, but there is also life for Ivan Toney beyond the World Cup.
“He is very well in the frame. What he will do with his club until then is very important.
