Curitiba could accept crypto to pay taxes

More and more municipalities are including crypto in their development and tax collection plans. This time it is Curitiba, the capital of Parana state in Brazil, which is considering accepting cryptocurrency payments for municipal taxes. The architect of this project is city councilor Noemia Rocha, who suggested the city consider how to achieve this with the help of third-party payment companies.

The proposal recognizes the acceptance of crypto in Brazil and pushes Curitiba, which is considered a tech hub in the country, to explore this possibility for its features. About this view of the functionality of the proposal, Rocha said:

Cryptocurrencies have become financial assets of immense popularity in the global economy and are already alternative forms to the “nationalization of money”, as evidenced by the numerous operations carried out through the virtual environment.

Inspired by Rio de Janeiro

Councilor Rocha also clarified that this proposal is inspired by the progress made by Rio de Janeiro in this area, having already announced that it will accept this type of payment for municipal taxes in 2023. She thinks this could be a good opportunity to update the payment system for these taxes to include this new type of currency.

The bill, which will be voted on symbolically next week, will have to be examined by the mayor of Curitiba to take stock of its implementation. However, the executive is under no obligation to approve the bill, as it is presented as a suggestion.

Other cities are also implementing cryptocurrency acceptance to pay municipal taxes. One of them is Buenos Aires, which as part of its digitization push aims to include these payments and a new blockchain-based identification system to simplify the formalities that every citizen must complete each year.

However, Mendoza, an Argentine province, has been accepting crypto tax payments through a payment provider since August, receiving the national currency delivered by that payment company. Currencies currently accepted are stablecoins such as USDC, USDC, and DAI.
