In his upcoming memoir entitled Successes, flops and other illusions: my forty years in Hollywoodfilmmaker Ed Zwick reflects on directing Brad Pitt in 1994. Autumn legends. The excerpt published by Vanity Fair mentions that the filmmaker wrote that the film was in limbo after Tom Cruise decided to abandon the project. He writes,

Having grown up in a rural Missouri, he had known men like Tristan, he said. When he left the meeting, I felt I had found the right actor. The filmmaker recalls, however, that Pitt’s feelings toward the film changed after he read the first picture and that he received a call from Pitt’s agent telling him that he wanted to leave the film. Zwick wrote that producer Marshall Herskovitz talked him out of it. The filmmaker continued:
“Sometimes, no matter how experienced or sensitive you are as a director, things just don’t work. You think the actor is oppositional, but he finds you dictatorial.
Ed Zwick explained that some actors have an authority problem, but directors are threatened when intelligent actors tend to ask them difficult questions, which reveals that they were not adequately prepared. He said both were right and both were wrong, adding that Pitt’s anxiety about the film never went away. The director noted in his memoir that Pitt seemed laid back at first, but could be volatile when upset.
Zwick noted, however, that the crew had become accustomed to their dust-ups, but that both would reconcile after the explosion, adding that none of it came from a personal space. Speaking about Tom Cruise’s decision to drop out of the project, Zwick mentioned that the actor declined to participate in the project because it didn’t fit the “ethos of the character.”

Further in his memoirs, the filmmaker noted that the actor after seeing the final cut of the film; was not happy to find that he felt like he had underestimated the character’s madness. Zwick wrote in his memoir via Vanity Fair:
“I had actually only cut one shot of the scene where Tristan is raging with fever, screaming as the waves overwhelm him on the schooner. But it was a shot he really liked and he would have been small enough to leave it, and I should have done it. My apologies, Brad.
Pitt had mentioned in an interview that at the time of filming, he struggled with a lot of things that he took to the filmmaker, adding that he was not a pleasant human being to be around at the time. Autumn legends upon its release, it received positive reviews from critics as well as audiences, as well as praised performances. Autumn legends was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Sound at the 67th Academy Awards and managed to win the Best Cinematography award.
Autumn legends wasn’t the only film Pitt didn’t like, but Interview with a Vampire This didn’t seem to please the actor either. During an interview with EW, Pitt admitted that he was unhappy while filming and wanted to quit. He said,
“I tell you, one day it broke me. It felt like life was too short for this quality of life. I called David Geffen, who was a good friend. He was a producer and he came to visit us. I said, “David, I can’t do this anymore. I can not do it. How much will my trip cost me? And he answers very calmly: “Forty million dollars.”
Pitt added that listening to this took all the anxiety away from him and he thought he had to get up and overcome this and that’s what he did.
