A baby boy has died from injuries sustained when Mississippi police shot dead his suspected father, authorities said Tuesday.
The several-month-old child was traveling with his father, Eric Derell Smith, 30, who was wanted in a Louisiana double homicide investigation, officials said.
Smith was fatally shot in an attempted arrest in Mississippi and despite “the efforts of medical personnel, the child died of the injuries sustained,” according to a statement from Biloxi Police Major Christopher De Back .
The chain of deadly events began in Baker, Louisiana on Monday when Smith allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, Christin Parker, 32, and nephew, 26, Brandon Parker at around 11:30 a.m. CDT, according to the Sheriff’s Office. of East Baton Rouge.
Smith then fled east with the child, who lived with his mother, Parker, in a blue Nissan Altima, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
Biloxi police learned that Smith entered Mississippi on Interstate 10, and at the 40 mile marker, “the suspect drove into the turf median and got stuck” around 3 p.m., according to De Back’s statement. .
“When the suspect got out of the vehicle, shots were fired. Medical attention was given to the suspect, but he died of his injuries,” De Back added. “The minor was injured and was taken to a local medical facility for treatment.”
