First leg

Flying close to the sun has been a familiar scenario for PSG in Europe this season and it now remains a recurring theme with a 1-0 deficit to be reversed after the first leg for the second time in a row. Barcelona were knocked out after the Ligue 1 champions overcame a 3-2 home defeat and now the trick must be applied in reverse with a one-goal deficit to take home, which should – in theory – be easier to achieve for Paris. Fullkrug’s 36th-minute goal in Dortmund was the difference in the first leg, and it is now up to PSG to create the chance they created in Germany, but this time to take it. Terzic’s side also created more openings but were limited to just one shot on target here earlier in the season and Luis Enrique has this Paris team looking much better now than it did then. Since the opening day of Ligue 1, PSG have failed to score at the Parc des Princes, while BVB’s five clean sheets are a competition record on Tuesday, so something must give.

Dortmund’s journey

Terzic’s side beat Atletico Madrid in spectacular fashion with an aggregate score of 5-4 to reach the last four for the first time since 2012-13 under Jurgen Klopp. Dortmund automatically qualified for the Champions League by winning the first leg and could yet emulate their 1996-97 feat if they go all the way. BVB actually edged out PSG in Group F, with Milan entering the UEFA Europa League and Newcastle United exiting. The Germans have won just two of their last seven meetings with PSG, the other coming in the 2019-20 round of 16, but they extended their unbeaten run to 11 games in the CL with last week’s victory.

PSG’s journey

Luis Enrique’s men beat Barcelona in spectacular fashion to reach these semi-finals with a 6-4 aggregate success sealed in Catalonia. This is PSG’s third Final Four appearance in the last five seasons, which is a big improvement over some of its past efforts. Real Sociedad fell to quarter-final victims Barça in the round of 16 and it was Dortmund who finished ahead of the Parisians in Group F, although PSG won 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 away. That 3-1 combination would be enough to send the French champions to the final for the first time since 2020, but the Ligue 1 giants would need a 3-0 home win to replicate that aggregate scoreline here. Last week’s defeat ended a run of 15 unbeaten away matches in all competitions for Paris.

Team News

PSG: Lucas Hernandez’s season at PSG is over as are his hopes for UEFA Euro 2024 with France and perhaps his 2024 after surgery following a nasty injury last week. Hernandez and Presnel Kimpembe – both regular French internationals when fit – are now suffering from long-term injuries that could have major consequences on their careers. Lucas Beraldo is more likely to step in than Milan Skriniar and Germany’s Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola could open the door for Marco Asensio, Lee Kang-in or Goncalo Ramos to help Kylian Mbappe in attack for what is almost certainly his final UCL. match at the Parc des Princes with PSG.

PSG XI potential: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Beraldo, Mendès; Ruiz, Vitinha, Zaire-Emery; Dembélé, Ramos, Mbappé.

Dortmund: Julian Ryerson was forced off injured against Augsburg while Ramy Bensebaini, Julien Duranville and Sébastien Haller also missed out. Ryerson and Haller are expected to be fit on Tuesday but Karim Adeyemi is slightly concerned after suffering a tough knock. Assuming he is fit, Adeyemi and Manchester United-owned Jadon Sancho should start again.

Potential Dortmund XI: Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen; Sabitzer, Can; Sancho, Brandt, Adeyemi; Fullkrug.

Prediction

PSG’s home form and recovery skills should still make them the favorite for this one, but only narrowly and a Dortmund goal could be deadly. A one-goal home win that would result in extra time and possibly penalties wouldn’t be a huge surprise, but Luis Enrique’s Parisians will fancy themselves breaking through the German backline more than once. In case it exceeds 90 minutes, it could end 3-1 against Paris after extra time. Take: PSG 2, Dortmund 0.
