BMW X1 2022 rendered and spied showing more details

The next-gen BMW X1 returns in a new batch of spy photos finally revealing more of the crossover’s design. Spied in Germany alongside a number of other BMW prototypes (including what appears to be a hotter M4 version), the top-of-the-line Bimmer sports its production headlights and taillights and shows off some interesting details.

We’re happy to announce that the grills won’t increase in size compared to the outgoing model, and this prototype reveals a sporty design for the lower bumper. This may be a first clue of what the new X1’s M Sport package will look like, but there are still a lot of disguises out there and we can’t really tell.

According to our photographers, this was a traditional combustion model and it seems to us that it is a diesel model judging by the layout of the exhaust at the rear. Speaking of the rear, we can finally take a look at the taillights as BMW no longer tests the crossover with provisional clusters.

Using the latest spy photos as a basis, designer Magnus.Concepts created the rendering you see at the top of this page. It gives an overview of the design of the front with the new headlights and slightly larger grilles, as well as the lower grille layout as seen in spy photos. Plus, you can see what the new crossover door handles will look like, taking inspiration from those used on the i4.

The 2022 BMW X1 (codename U11) will arrive in the United States at some point next year and will be offered with combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The more affordable versions will be driven by the front wheels, while an AWD system will be available as an option. We expect to see the new X1 in its entirety towards the end of the year with a market launch slated for 2022.
