Almost a decade after starring in horror thriller Sinister, Ethan Hawke reunites with co-writer / director Scott Derrickson in the new trailer for The Black Phone.
Hawke plays a terrifying character known only as The Grabber, who is responsible for a series of child abductions in a tight-knit community.
Derrickson collaborated with his longtime writing partner C. Robert Cargill on the screenplay, which was adapted from the short story of the same name by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son).

The trailer begins with a class dropping out of semester, as young Finney Blake (Mason Thames) walks home from school with his sister Gwen (Madeline McGraw).
She tells him that she is spending the night at Susie’s place as Finney spots a leaflet for another missing child.
Gwen says the papers call her “The Grabber,” as Finney puts it, “I wish you didn’t call him that.”
Coming Home: The trailer begins with a class leaving the semester, as young Finney Blake (Mason Thames) walks home from school with his sister Gwen (Madeline McGraw)
Flyer: She tells him that she is spending the night at Susie’s place as Finney spots a flyer for another missing child
Missing: Gwen says newspapers call her “The Grabber,” as Finney puts it, “I wish you didn’t call it that”
She asks her brother if he really believes the story that The Grabber can somehow hear the kids say The Grabber and that’s how he chooses his victims.
Finney is next seen walking alone, when a black van with the Abracadabra Entertainment & Supplies logo painted on it, when the mysterious Hawke character stumbles into the frame, dropping two bags of groceries.
The man laughs at his broken groceries and asks Finney to put his hat back on him, saying he’s “a part-time wizard”.
Believes: She asks her brother if he really believes the story that The Grabber can somehow hear kids say The Grabber and that’s how he chooses his victims
Stumbles: Finney is then seen walking alone, when a black van with the Abracadabra Entertainment & Supplies logo painted on it, when the mysterious Hawke character stumbles in the frame, dropping two bags of groceries
Finney walks up to the van and asks, “Are those black balloons in there,” as The Grabber puts on his hat and says, “Would you like to see a magic trick?”
A pair of black balloons are caught in a tree, as we see a school assembly where it is announced that Finney is missing.
As Gwen goes out on her bike in search of her brother, we see Finney in a dark basement room with only a mattress and an old black rotary telephone.
Van: Finney walks up to the van and asks, “Are those black balloons in there?”, While The Grabber puts on his hat and says, “Do you want to see a magic trick? “
Balloons: A pair of black balloons are taken from a tree, as we see a school assembly where it is announced that Finney is missing
Basement: As Gwen gets out on her bike in search of her brother, we see Finney in a dark basement room with only a mattress and an old black rotary telephone
He picks up the phone and tries to get a ringtone as The Grabber tells him, “It doesn’t work because he was seen wearing an evil mask.
Finney says he’s going to scream and scratch his face, as The Grabber shows off his elaborate facial mask and says, “That face?” … but it was just a dream Gwen had … or was it ?
She is going to tell her father (Jeremy Davies) that she had a dream telling the cops what she saw, as it is revealed that they never disclosed any details that Finney was taken by a man with black balloons.
Mask: He picks up the phone and tries to get a ringtone as The Grabber tells him: “This is not working because he saw him wearing an evil mask
Face: Finney says he’s going to scream and scratch his face, as The Grabber shows off his elaborate face mask and says, “That face?
Finney is lying on his mattress when suddenly the black phone rings, and when he picks up, a voice tells him not to hang up.
Finney asks who the person is, as we see the spirit of one of the abducted children whose faces adorn the flyers Finney was looking at before.
“You all know our names. You get out of here, ”the voices tell him, as Finney begins to follow their instructions.
Phone: Finney is lying on his mattress when suddenly the black phone starts ringing, and when he picks up, a voice tells him not to hang up
Every voice he hears from The Black Phone is a previous victim, one of which tells Finney about the storm door lock combination.
One of the voices asks Finney to use the telephone receiver as a weapon against The Grabber as the trailer ends with one of the victims telling Finney that today is the day he fights back.
The trailer ends with Finney walking past a sleeping Grabber and quietly entering the suit before the Grabber opens his eyes.
The film, which also stars James Ransone, E. Roger Mitchell and Kellan Rhude, hits theaters on February 4.
