Billy Ray Cyrus and his fiancée FIREROSE teamed up with rising country star Travis Denning to deliver a powerful performance in honor of this year’s ACM Spirit Award winner, Charlie Daniels.
“Long-haired country boy”
The three country stars came together on stage during the 2023 ACM Honors to celebrate Daniels’ legacy that was left in the country music community following his passing in 2020. The trio of country stars lit up the Ryman Auditorium with their vibrant harmonies and epic guitar riffs as they treated the crowd to their rendition of “Long Haired Country Boy”. This classic track written solely by Charlie Daniels was originally released as part of the Charlie Daniels Bands’ 1974 album, Fire on the mountain and was later re-released in January 1980 with slightly changed lyrics.
ACM Spirit Prize
Each year, the ACM Spirit Award is presented to a singer-songwriter who continues the legacy of country music legend Merle Haggard by following his own path, creating great songs, and embodying the spirit of Haggard through authentic performances and great storytelling.
Charlie Daniels was chosen to receive this honor this year because he has done just that with a career that has brought him hits on both pop and country radio for five decades. Additionally, during this period, he has accumulated numerous accolades, including 20 ACM Awards during his career.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member died July 6, 2020, at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee. Daniels was 83 at the time of his death from a hemorrhagic stroke, according to a statement from his publicist.
“I’m sorry Dad couldn’t be there to accept this award.”
Charlie Daniels Jr. was in attendance at the 2023 ACM Honors and proudly accepted the ACM Spirit Award on behalf of his late father. After expressing his gratitude to Cyrus, FIREROSE and Denning for their memorable tribute, the country legend’s son then delivered an incredibly heartfelt speech.
“I’m sorry Dad couldn’t be there to accept this award. It’s currently booked in the most glorious venue imaginable,” he began. “Mom and Dad moved to Nashville in 1967 with $20 to their name, me, two years old, and the clutch in their car. But Dad always said he was living proof that the Lord would give you the desires of your heart. He made our family more successful than Dad could have ever imagined. Any of us could have imagined it.
As Daniels Jr. continued, he explained that growing up with a father who spent most of his time on the road was undoubtedly a challenge for their family. But at the same time, he understood the sacrifices Daniels was making to provide them with a better life.
“We missed him, but to me he will always be the best that ever lived.” Thanks to everyone who played a role in Dad’s career. I can’t thank everyone. I don’t have time, but fans, thank you to the Academy for giving him this award. He would be deeply honored and humbled. Mom and I miss him terribly, but we know we will see him again one day. Thank you for our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
“Exciting things to come”
Finally, he hinted that new projects are in the works that aim to continue Charlie Daniels’ work today and keep his memories alive for the next generation of country music fans.
“He left behind a legacy of patriotism, music, helping our veterans, honoring our Lord and standing up for what he believed in. My mission is to maintain that legacy for as long as possible and we have some exciting things coming in the future. working to help continue that legacy. You ain’t seen nothing yet,” Daniels Jr. teased before concluding his speech. “Like Dad always said, ‘Let’s do everyone making the day count.” Thank you.”
Previous recipients of the ACM Spirit Award include Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton.
The event, dubbed “the country music industry’s favorite party,” also marked a milestone for artists Billy Ray Cyrus and FIREROSE who made their red carpet debut as a couple on Wednesday, August 23.
