Billy Joe Saunders went straight to hospital after suffering an orbital (orbit) bone fracture during his loss to Canelo on Saturday night.
The previously undefeated 31-year-old was arrested after the end of the eighth round, in which he was crushed with a right uppercut which caused the injury.
The fight started off positively for Canelo, who was the couple’s most active from the start.
He mistook Saunders for feints before hammering home by recounting body shots.
However, the Briton then picked up the momentum and appeared to start winning rounds himself.
His production increased and he was more and more successful until the eighth and last lap.
In that session, Saunders fell back after being caught with a big right counter-uppercut, which caused serious eye damage, and he just survived the round before his corner ended the fight.
It was then announced on the DAZN show that Saunders immediately left in an ambulance.
The injury is believed to be a fracture of the orbital bone (eye socket), although this has not yet been 100% confirmed.
Saunders coach Mark Tibbs told Behind The Gloves: “His orbit was collapsed and he couldn’t see.
“I didn’t get the answer I wanted from him. I had to shoot it.
