Billy Joe Saunders’ dad has claimed his son’s fight with Canelo Alvarez this Saturday is now OFF.
Both sides are locked in a dispute over the size of the ring for the fight, with Canelo initially wanting an 18-foot version, while Saunders hoped for a 24-foot equivalent.
The elusive Briton is expected to attempt to use his skills and moves to defeat the King pound for pound, but he’ll need as much space as possible to dodge his onslaught.
Canelo agreed to climb 20 feet, while Saunders fell to 22 feet, but currently no one is ready to move further.
Tom Saunders has now told iFL TV: “There is nothing in the contract about the size of the ring, these are all negotiations.
“The negotiations failed in a big way…
“We wanted a 24 foot ring, we went down to a 22 foot inner ring.
“What they’re trying to do is take Billy Joe’s legs off, we’re against everything here.
“At the end of the day, I’m not going to let my son box in a 20-foot ring [against] supposed to be the king of boxing pound for pound.
“They said it was 20 feet or book your return flights. So unfortunately we apologize to all the fans …
“They are trying to take his legs off, the fight will not be fair. The fight is over.
Saunders Sr admitted that there is a chance the event could be saved if a 22 foot ring is agreed, but insisted that as it stands there is no fight.
Fans are hoping common sense will prevail, although promoter Eddie Hearn has yet to comment on the situation.
Billy Joe told White and Jordan on talkSPORT on Tuesday, “There’s a little hiccup today that everyone is trying to resolve.
“I left that up to my MTK management team who are here sorting it out, it’s a big deal to be honest.
“The problem is, I’ve come here and they’re trying to throw me into a phone booth in a boxing ring.
“He [the stadium] is hundreds and hundreds of feet long and they want to stick a 16/18 foot ring in the middle.
“For me, this is simply unacceptable. I want a 24 foot ring and they say it won’t happen.
“I left it to my team and I’m sure they will solve it, otherwise there won’t be a fight …
“You can’t just make me fly here, show me the ring we’re using.” I trained my whole camp in a 24 foot ring, this is a unification fight, not a British title.
“It’s like someone training on a 200m running track and someone training on a 400m running track, there is a big difference.
“We all know his fighting style, anyone who knows boxing knows how this fight – – how I’m in my head.
“And he has his own fighting style and his game plan, and I know his game plan.
“His game plan doesn’t wait, his game plan comes to me and I want a place where I can move and get rid of my boxing.”
