In a recent interview with High Snobiety, Billie talked about respect in the music industry.
She admitted that if she had started her career being more feminine and girly, she wouldn’t have been taken seriously in the industry.
The star also noted that her “masculine” dress sense has helped her a lot in being taken seriously as a teen entertainer.
“People saw me as this 15-year-old, kid, who wore this kind of stuff, had this kind of look, acted this kind of way, said this kind of way. I felt like I couldn’t change. That’s why I went so far to the other side,” Billie said.
She added: “I was trying to prove, ‘Hey, f*** you guys, I can do whatever I want.’ Now I can look really masculine if I want to, and really feminine if I want to, and it won’t make the headlines.
Acknowledging how much her masculine side had helped her in her career, she said: “I think people took me more seriously because I had this more masculine way of dressing all along. my career.
“If I had been more feminine and girly, people would have been much less respectful of me.”
Billie also opened up about how her gender affected her tenure in the music industry.
“I just remember crying in my bed because I was thinking about what kind of show I would like to put on,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.
“There was a specific period where I was in this abyss of despair about myself because I didn’t have much to look up to for girls like me to be taken seriously.”
She felt that her sex was holding her back.
“I would feel so hopeless because I’m a girl so I could never have a show like that, I could never be free up there and wild…to play that way and be more physical and be more about the performance…I thought that would never happen,” Billie added.
But she thinks finding the balance really helps.
“I feel most powerful when I feel most masculine in my life… I can also find power in femininity. It’s kind of a balance between the two.
“Based on the way I walk and stand, my clothes, my face, my jewelry, my fingers and everything I am day to day. I like to feel more masculine than feminine, it just makes me feel better.
“I struggled with it for a long time because I wanted to feel feminine and like it, but it really wasn’t, but it’s finding times where you can have that and it always feels good” , she said.
Billie revealed that she now had more hope for the future.
“The way women are dominating absolutely everyone in this industry right now is so exciting to me,” she said.
“It really gives me hope and inspiration. It’s not just women doing one thing, it’s women doing all kinds of different things.
“And looking different and acting different and having different styles. There’s such a range right now and so nice to see and it’s refreshing and new and it’s never been like this.
“It’s really cool to be a part of it,” Billie concluded.
