Billie Eilish has discussed her treatment at the hands of Instagram trolls, admitting that she “cannot win.”
The singer has regularly talked about her experience with body shamers and society’s expectations for her to dress in a certain way.
Now in a new interview with Dazed, Eilish discussed a recent experience she had with trolls on Instagram after posting photos from her Hawaii vacation earlier this year.
The singer shared a video from her vacation that showed her in a bikini and spoke of the mass of negative comments that followed.
“It was trendy,” she recalls. “There were comments like,” I don’t like her anymore because as soon as she turns 18, she’s a whore. “I can’t win. I can’t win.”
Referring to a previous example of negative comments around her appearance, which followed a photo of her wearing a tank top, Eilish said, “I have seen comments like,” How dare she speak of not wanting to to be sexualized and to wear that ?! “”
The singer says the comments had a negative effect on her own body image, saying: There was a time last year when I was naked and I didn’t recognize my body because I never had it not seen in a while. I sometimes saw him and I said to myself: “Whose body is this?” “
On the opening date of his “Where are we going?” World tour, whose dates in the United States have now been postponed due to a coronavirus, Eilish shared a powerful statement about bodily shame.
“Some people hate what I wear; some people praise it; some people use it to shame others; some people use it to make me feel ashamed, “she said during the video.
“Do you want me to be smaller?” she asks. “Weaker? Softer? Larger? Do you want me to be quiet? Are my shoulders provoking you? Is my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips? The body with which I was born – n is that not what you wanted?
“If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I lose the diapers, I’m a slut. Although you have never seen my body, you still judge it and you judge me for it. Why?”
