For weeks, Bill Belichick has remained mum on his NFL future, refusing to address rumors and reports that he and the Patriots are destined for a breakup after 23 seasons. That continued on Sunday, with Belichick revealing after a loss to the Jets in Week 18 that he would soon meet with team owner Robert Kraft to discuss next steps.

“As far as the future goes, I will sit down with Robert like I do every year at some point at the end of the season,” Belichick said, according to NBC Sports, “and we will talk about things as we always do.” I’m sure it will happen. But that’s about all I have to say about it for now, because there’s nothing else to say. “

New England’s loss Sunday dropped the Patriots to 4-13 for the 2023 season — the worst mark Belichick has ever had as a head coach. The Athletic recently reported that at least two teams with coaching vacancies lined up are hoping to meet with Belichick in the event he leaves New England, but it remains to be seen how a split would play out, assuming the Pats are ready for a fresh start.

Kraft could look to trade Belichick to another team to further solidify the club’s draft capital ahead of a planned rebuild in 2024. Regardless, plenty in the NFL expect the two parties to go their separate ways one way or another, according to CBS Sports executive Jonathan Jones, NFL Insider, although it’s not likely a decision will be made immediately after the season.
