The leaders of the United States and Russia did not discuss oil prices or the OPEC + deal at their summit in Geneva on Wednesday, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
Putin and US President Joe Biden also did not discuss Venezuela, an OPEC member under US sanctions exempted from OPEC + alliance cuts, Peskov told Russian reporters in Moscow on Thursday, as reported. the TASS news agency.
The two leaders, however, discussed Iran and ongoing talks on returning the United States and the Islamic Republic to the so-called nuclear deal, which would ultimately lead to the lifting of US sanctions on Iranian oil exports.
“There is some progress,” Peskov told reporters, adding that Moscow hopes “we will manage to get the situation out of its current state.”
President Biden also asked Putin on Wednesday how he would feel if someone carried out a ransomware attack on Russian pipelines.
But Biden and Putin did not discuss oil prices or the OPEC + deal, Peskov said: “No, this topic was not discussed.”
Since taking office in January, President Biden has not commented publicly on international oil prices or the OPEC + Group’s bid-fixing efforts. This approach contrasts with that of his predecessor, President Trump, who regularly used Twitter to criticize OPEC for its actions and at the height of the pandemic last year, rallied Saudi Arabia and Russia to return to their roots. OPEC + agreement that they had broken. for a month.
According to Natural Gas World, Nord Stream 2 was also not part of the Biden-Poutin summit.
Germany, the point of arrival of the pipeline, has always viewed the Russian-led project from an economic perspective, while the United States, several European countries, including the Baltic States, Poland and the European Union (EU), have expressed concern over Russia’s use of gas sales and its gas monopoly Gazprom as a political tool.
But last month the United States announced it would drop sanctions about to be imposed on German company Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project.
