The incident happened when a defensive mix-up between him and Jordan Pickford saw the ball land at the feet of Kai Havertz.

Rushing in to make a tackle, Godfrey’s boot appeared to get stuck in the turf at Goodison Park, causing scenes of concern around the stadium.

Mason Holgate replaced the 24-year-old but the Toffees were dealt a second blow in the second half as Yerry Mina was also forced off the pitch, leading Frank Lampard to regret their terrible injury luck .

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard said: “It makes it difficult. Ben has this injury, we think it’s a small fracture in his leg, in his fibula, so we’ll see how long it lasts.

“Yerry suffered an ankle injury that we don’t know much about yet.

“We had that here a bit. It’s hard to put your finger on it – Ben’s foot gets stuck in the grass, Yerry’s I didn’t see.

“These are not muscle injuries, these are abnormal injuries and so we have to make sure the team is strong enough to deal with these things.”

When asked if it would change what they do in the market, Lampard replied: “Maybe, maybe not.

“We have central defenders at the club, but we are looking in different areas and we know what we want to do.

“I’m not going to declare it now, but people can sense there is movement and we are trying to work in the right direction.”
