BEECHER, Mich. (WJRT) – (07/04/2021) – Two Flint-area boys basketball teams play to knock their tickets for Saturday’s State Championship game.
Before that, however, they will need to qualify for Thursday’s state semi-finals in East Lansing.
One of those teams is Beecher, who is back in the semi-finals for the first time since 2017.
On Wednesday night, they boarded the team bus to East Lansing for Thursday morning’s game, and the community is giving them a lot of smiles.
It started with a late night Facebook post on Tuesday. Athletic Director Secretary Trayc Cunningham asks “Buctown” who might be willing to help fuel the Beecher Boys as they prepare for a state championship race.
“Was going to bed. When I woke up my phone was exploding and I was like, ‘What’s going on? And it was just donations pouring in,” Cunningham said.
Their entire trip to East Lansing was donated and paid for from hotel rooms to Thursday morning breakfast served in their rooms, and even before they arrived, donations from alumni dating from the 1976 class until the class. from 2009. They have added hot items like pizzas, sandwiches and even freshly barbecued bratwurst.
Cunningham made snack bags for each of the athletes with goodies like Gatorade, Oreos, and fruit, hoping to share an inspiring message.
“To see that they are loved. Let people watch them. That people care about them and have the support of their teachers, their community, their administrators. They have so much support that they want to win this for the community, ”Cunningham said.
Junior Carmelo Harris agrees, saying, “This gives us hope. This means that we have supporters who really believe in what we are doing and who really want to buy into what we are doing and invest in us.
Head coach Mike Williams says it shows what they’re all about and not just Beecher.
He wishes good luck to Grand Blanc who also plays in the semi-finals of D1.
“It was the Flint area that took us and they wrapped their arms around us. I hope we both lift a trophy for this region for this city for this man from the city who has been through so many difficult times, ”said Williams.
The Beecher State semi-final match against Hanover-Horton will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
