Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid live updates: Champions League team news, lineups and predictions – The Athletic

Facing RB Leipzig in the round of 16, Real Madrid secured a one-goal victory in Germany in the first leg, but the match could very easily have gone the other way.

The hosts started the contest on top and thought they had taken the lead in the third minute, but Benjamin Sesko’s goal was disallowed by VAR. They had numerous other chances to take the lead, but it was Madrid’s Brahim Diaz who opened the scoring just after half-time, scoring a magnificent solo effort.

Andriy Lunin made several important saves allowing the Spaniards to take the lead for the second leg.

Just like in the first leg, Real Madrid were lucky to avoid defeat in the second leg, winning 2-1 on aggregate to book their place in the quarter-finals.

RB Leipzig created several clear chances to score, but Lunin once again made big save after big save. The La Liga side doubled their overall lead in the 65th minute when Vinicius Junior scored on a counter-attack, but the Germans responded three minutes later through Willi Orban to come within a goal.

The Bundesliga side almost forced extra time when Dani Olmo hit the woodwork in second-half stoppage time, but Madrid managed to secure the victory.
