Robert Lewandowski has arguably been the best footballer in the world in 2020, but unfortunately won’t get the recognition he deserves.
The Bayern Munich striker would arguably have been favorites to win the Ballon d’Or this year without the coronavirus pandemic.
The organizers decided to remove the annual award and deny Lewandowski the crowning of a stellar year.
Asked by a Polish point of sale Sportowe Fakty who deserved to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or, he said: “Me. We have won everything we can with Bayern. In all competitions – Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League – I was the top scorer. I think a player who does that would win the Ballon d’Or.
It is difficult to argue with Lewandowski. No other player has reached the heights the 32-year-old has reached this year.
The forward has scored 35 goals in just 30 games in 2020 and has won just about every trophy up for grabs in domestic football.
The Poland international posted an image on Instagram posing with all of the headlines he picked this year and there is barely enough room in the photo.
He wrote: “When someone doubts your ability, start working twice as hard to prove them wrong. This is my story.”
He won the Bundesliga, German Cup, German Super Cup, Champions League and UEFA Super Cup with Bayern Munich.
His personal accolades included Bundesliga player of the season, top scorer of the season and top scorer in the Champions League.
The Ballon d’Or would have been singing glory for Lewandowski, but if his form continued into 2021, he will almost certainly be a contender for next year’s award.
