The Champions League is next on tap as the Frauen continue to mount a challenge for the Bundesliga title.
Bayern Munich cruised to a 5-0 victory over FC Köln in the Frauen-Bundesliga, with all five goals scored in the first half and in an eerily similar fashion.
The opening goal came through sheer persistence from Sydney Lohmann, who took advantage of a loose touch from a defender to drive into the box and collect a low shot outside the boot at the far post. The second goal was also helped by a defender’s touch – a successful challenge from Klara Bühl only bounced off the Bayern striker’s body and she took it in stride before firing from range.
It all happened at the post on the right of Cologne goalkeeper Manon Klett that day. Georgia Stanway played a nice one-two against Lina Magull, who cashed in like Lohmann had earlier, but from a more central angle.
At 3-0 in the first half, the match was really dusted off. More delicate dribbling from Lohmann resulted in a reduction from Bühl, who tapped him into an open net. Then, before the end of the half, Stanway played Lea Schüller behind the right wing, the reduction arriving at the feet of Maximiliane Rall. Rall – you guessed it – had his shot deflected by the goalkeeper to slip just inside the right post. It was that kind of day for Klett, and the 5-0 scoreline lasted the rest of the way.
The Frauen are ready to embark on an absolutely crucial game streak. Bayern face Arsenal FC on Tuesday in the Champions League, then league leaders Wolfsburg on Saturday. The second leg against Arsenal in England will then take place the following Wednesday, and two games later will be a DFB-Pokal semi-final against Wolfsburg. Fasten your seat belts!
