A fire that broke out early Wednesday in the Chawkbazar area of Chattogram burned down Bata and Samsung showrooms. A branch of Social Islami Bank Limited and a hotel residence were also damaged by the fire.
The fire started in the Bata showroom around 12:15 a.m., said Abdul Malek, deputy director of Chattogram fire and civil defense.
Six vehicles from three fire stations rushed to the scene and put out the fire around 4:30 a.m., he said.
“The fire originated in the Bata showroom on the ground floor and then engulfed the adjacent Samsung showroom and other businesses in the building. The Bata showroom was completely damaged by the fire,” he said.
The cause and damage of the fire could be known after investigation, he added.
Bata showroom manager Norottom Kumar Das told New Age that they closed the showroom around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday. Two hours later, they were notified of the fire.
“Products and furniture were completely damaged by the fire. The estimated loss caused by the fire is worth around Tk 1 crore,” he said.
Md Akhtaruzzaman, senior executive of Social Islami Bank Limited, told New Age that the bank was partially damaged by the fire.
“No important documents were affected by the fire. Only the sign and the front side burned in the fire,” he said, adding that banking services at the branch would remain suspended on Wednesday.
