Football in South Carolina: the Gamecocks in the top 4 for Josiah Trotter
The South Carolina basketball will face Georgetown on hardwood.
The South Carolina Sports Department has announced a home series featuring the power of Georgetown College Basketball, starting in December. The first meeting will be held in Colombia in the upcoming 2021 season, with the Gamecocks making a return trip to Washington DC next winter.
The series sets up a clash between two old school style coaches in Frank Martin and Patrick Ewing of Hoya. NBA Hall of Fame member Ewing has been on the program since 2017, leading the team to an overall record of 62-59. The Hoyas only went 13-13 last season, but made their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015 after winning the Big East Conference tournament.
It will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two clubs, with the Hoyas leading the overall standings with a 4-1 advantage. The streak dates back to 1923, a 31-14 victory at Georgetown, but the Gamecocks last won 69-66 at the 2005 NIT, a tournament South Carolina would win.
Frank Martin will look to recover from a 6-15 season in 2020 after posting the program’s lowest winning percentage since 1998-99. The roster is in transition, with seven players entering the transfer portal and one declaring himself for the NBA Draft. South Carolina will need to replace its top scorer in AJ Lawson, but the program brought in four transfers in the offseason to fill the gaps. Martin was also part of a Top 40 recruiting class that includes two of the top 150 prospects.
