ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – As Democrats worry about tight competition in Virginia’s race for governor, candidate Terry McAuliffe turns to a popular former president, other political leaders and massive outreach programs to encourage the participation of a key constituency: black voters.
Former President Barack Obama will headline a rally at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond on Saturday. The visit of the country’s first black president could help energize black voters, who helped McAuliffe win in his first gubernatorial bid in 2013.
