BANGOR, Pa. – Residents of Bangor, Northampton County, said they were frustrated with a continual oil spill into Martins Creek.
The Environmental Protection Agency said that since early April, at least a few thousand gallons of oil have entered the creek.
Officials said the oil was going into the creek at a storm sewer outfall near Pennsylvania Avenue and First Street.
The agency said it has cleaned about 2,000 gallons so far. A vacuum truck and absorbent material are used for the work.
The EPA said the leak came from a crack in the sewers several blocks away, but the agency was unable to determine the source.
A resident whose family lives near the creek said he was alarmed the leak had not yet been stopped.
“That’s a substantial amount of oil to be poured into the stream, especially a stream full of trout,” Frank Teribury said.
The EPA plans to use geomagnetic technology in late August to help identify the source of the spill.
Martins Creek empties into the Delaware River approximately six miles south of Bangor in Lower Mount Bethel Township.
