Ballon d’Or 2021: Messi and Putellas win in Paris
It’s fair to say that the immediate social reaction is exactly what you would expect: a perfect split of ‘Lewandowski was stolen’, ‘Messi is the greatest’ and everything in between. Including a few screams for the players who weren’t even in contention. And the “proof” that some individuals should have won because of, well, to put it bluntly, things they didn’t actually do in 2021.
But such is life on Twitter and beyond.

Messi has the Ballon d’Or and Messi presses the big red button – and lights up the Eiffel Tower in celebration. With a large, massive poster of himself and Alexia Putellas by his side.
What a double this would have been for Barcelona, if only they hadn’t been executed in the worst and most unfathomable ways for several years in a row.
As it stands, it’s a victory for PSG and a victory for Barcelona Femeni!
That brings the awards ceremony to a close, but we’ll get a lot of feedback along the way.

Has he been the the best in 2021 though? This is something that will be debated endlessly from here …

Gianluigi Donnarumma wins Yashin Goalkeeper Trophy at 2021 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony
Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper in the world this year during the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris.
