Ball Fever: Boys Sweet 4A & 5A 2020 Sweet 16 Sneak Peek – CHSAA Now

(Tim Bourke / TimBourke.com)

Well, it quickly escalated !! We have already had a ton of action, exciting games and of course some early upheavals that none of the experts saw coming.

Let’s take a brief look and how we got here and look to the future 5A and 4A Sweet 16 boys’ basketball.

Class 5A

Chauncey Billups Region

(Dennis Pleuss / Jeffco Athletics)

We talked about Obi Agbim, the No. 1 seed, Rangeview, who used to make the GREAT playoff time and managed to score 25 points in the Raiders 40 points on Arvada West.

The Raiders will now face 16 seeders, Mountain Vista, who beat Chatfield 91-55! No need for the “call” shot clock when Rangeview and the Eagles connect. Both teams have an average of 75 points per game, so the scorer and the statistician had better be ready!

Vista will need all of Reece Kelly’s 18 point and 9 rebound average to have a chance to follow our deep and talented seeded list.

The highest seeds in the lower half of the range also unfolded as predicted by the RPI. But it was not easy! Eighth-seeded Boulder knocked off a ThunderRidge team that we think would be a tough two-point game, while Columbine knocked out their enemy in Dakota Ridge by 5.

Boulder will be rooted for Luke O’Brien in the future once he joins the Buffaloes, but they won’t be tonight! O’Brien was an absolute “stat-hunter” in the rebels’ victory with 27 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists!

The Panthers will obviously have to put their defense to slow Luke, if possible! Both teams arrive with identical records of 20-4 … something to give!

Boys basketball Grandview Smoky Hill

(Marcus Gipson / Jmariahimages.com)

The No. 2 seed was frightened by a Fountain-Fort Carson team that dominated the Knights 19-14 in the fourth quarter, but the return attempt was very short, losing 1.

Greyson Carter does a bit of everything and averages 17 points 9 rebounds per game and will match in time with AJ Lacabe of Vista Peak, who was right with his 12 point average in the Bison’s 11 point victory over the visit of Windsor in round 2. All of the top RPI seeds are advancing here.

When the buffalo of Smoky Hill roll, it is an absolute spectacle! They were ready on Saturday as they racked up 105 points and moved away from Fossil Ridge.

The Buffaloes have an advanced lead leader at Quinten Rock who paces them as well as ultra athletic Jalen Weaver. Add the antics of Anthony Harris Jr with his complete set meeting more and more in second year, they are really worth the price of entry!

What could stop a deep and talented team? A team with another four-year-old point guard with Kobe Sanders of Chaparral, who can get warm at this time of the year. Second-year student Jeremiah Coleman is becoming a statistics player every night for Chap, who scored 91 points against Douglas County in the second round.

In December, Smoky won a five-point road victory at Chap at the tournament, but as we mentioned last week, Chap’s youth has intensified and the team is no longer what it was months ago. A fun PACE and PLACE to be here!

Larry Farmer Region

(Dennis Pleuss / Jeffco Athletics)

This region brought about our first “upheaval” as a veteran George Washington team, led by a Kendale Johnson Jr. back in the 1920s, who eliminated a young Horizon team. This made Horizon our highest ranked team to lose in 14th place.

The Patriots will have more to do with their plate as they head to No. 3 seed Ralston Valley, who had a solid first quarter of 20 points and finished with a fourth quarter of 21 points to beat Arapahoe by 11.

The Fever Crew loves senior management at this time of the year and Ralston Valley has three double-digit senior scores, led by tall man Caleb Rillos, 21! GW has the athletes to compete with the size of RV … it will be SWEET.

The highest seeds prevailed in the lower half of the farmers’ region at Valor and Eaglecrest, ready to meet in Sweet 16.

Valor is the tallest seeded sixth and got a Rocky Mountain test, but Roger Rosengarten was 6-6 on the field for 15 points total. Armando Miller, a dynamic junior, is the regular top scorer for the Eagles and they will need both to follow the Raptors’ average of 67 points per game, led by Zion Ruckard’s 17 points per game.

Eaglecrest lost to Overland by 9 in early February, but managed to win Saturday’s game by 12 in their third game against the Trailblazers this year.

The Raptors and the Eagles will be one of the best Sweet 16 games we have!

Kent Smith Region

Pomona Denver East Boys' Basketball

(Kevin McNearny)

This region provided our biggest upheaval in 2020 with the Regis Raiders who went to the Bruins’ den and eliminated one of the hottest teams in the state, Cherry Creek.

Many believed that the Bruins had won second or third place in their end-of-season race and won the toughest league in our state, but the 29-seeded Raiders had none. The Fever Crew watched Regis get his first win over GW months ago after a rare 0-9 start in and out of the state. We then mentioned not to let this 0-9 start to deceive you! Coach Shaw has found a way for this team to play their best ball at the right time!

Régis is full of juniors and Michael Wolf led the huge surprise with 21 points. Regis doesn’t have much time to celebrate as the reward for knocking Creek down is a visit to Denver East who defeated Legend at home in the second run.

The Angels do not have the depth of Eastern teams from the past, but have a core that can play with anyone in the state in their pressure style game. Sophomore Quis Davis led the score in the victory over Legend with 17 points. A real battle of contrasting styles with East averaging 85 points per game against 57 Regis.

Another surprise down this region with Broomfield grabbing a 1 point win on the road to Pine Creek. It gets even more difficult for Broomfield, with their reward for a Sweet 16 visit to Grandview.

Ryan Collins, 6 feet 9 inches, leads Broomfield in points and rebounds and will likely see a lot of Grandview’s big man, Caleb McGill, who averages 17 points per game.

The Eagles score faster than the Wolves who tire you methodically with patience, depth and size. The Wolves are heavy seniors with four starters who are already committed to playing college ball … the Eagles will have their hands full!

Class 4A

Ron Vlasin area

Lincoln Kennedy Boys Basketball

(David Harvey / ImageProPhotography.com)

Our No. 1 seed Mead scored more than 80 points in his Round 2 win and now averages 75 points per game against Silver Creek, who survived a close 2-point victory over Thomas Jefferson to reach Sweet 16. Silver Creek and Mead will compete for the first time this year.

The Fever Crew was lucky to see Mead live this year and it’s a well-oiled machine with players who know their role and don’t try to do too much. Congratulations to the coaching staff because teams with this type of talent and depth are sometimes difficult to “integrate”, but it is clear why Mead is # 1.

Andrew Duquette of Silver Creek leads his team with 19 points per game and they will need it and more to follow Mead.

The lower half of the Vlasin region brought what many thought was a possibility with seed # 25 taking seed # 8 Cheyenne Mountain. Cheyenne Mountain was # 1 in our ranking for a long stretch this year and Javonte Johnson in New Mexico averaged 30 unreal points and 10 rebounds for the WHOLE season! However, this Lincoln Lancer team has their own stallions at TJ Bamba (Washington State engagement) and Ty Foster, who led the Lancers to an 8 point road victory.

The Lancers now head to Montrose, who is 20-4 this season after a two-point win in Round 2 against Evergreen. Don’t look past Lincoln’s 15-10 Montrose record … these guys can hoop!

Larry Brunson area

Pueblo West Sand Creek Boys' Basketball

Glenwood Springs was not tested a winner by 25 against Weld Central and their opponent Sweet 16 faced a more difficult game with Green Mountain’s 50-46 victory over Centaurus. The two teams obtained an average in the middle of the 1950s in points per match and a balanced team scoring all levels.

All the signs indicate that it is near and descends until the last minutes.

The lower half of the support brings us revenge! Last December, Pueblo West defeated Harrison on his 65-62 floor. All of the highest seeds in this region also progressed, Pueblo West getting Sand Creek by 3 and Harrison passing Sierra 55-28.

Taylor Harris is the Pueblo West point guard here and Donta Dawson junior, 19 points per game, paces the Panthers in this rematch.

Guy Gibbs area

Boys' Cheyenne Mountain Widefield Basketball

(Dan Mohrmann / CHSAANow.com)

A single team has upset this region, Widefield having eliminated Conifer by 13 convincing points. The top seed in the region, Longmont n ° 3, humiliated Palisade by 28 points!

Widefield’s upset success was fueled by 20 points from Randall Days senior, 8 rebounds per game. Longmont arrives 21-3 behind the 15 points of Dallas Dye and 7 rebounds per exit.

19-5 Skyline vs 18-5 The Classic Academy is our lower half of this region’s Sweet 16 match. Another region with all the higher seeds of RPI is progressing.

Austin Robison is the executioner of statistics for Skyline with 14 points, 6 rebounds with Micah Lambert scoring 15 points for TCA. Another match that both teams can win!

Richard Tate area

(Dennis Pleuss / Jeffco Athletics)

Very interesting region here! Again, the highest seeds rolled right through the top and bottom of the region. The No. 4 seed Golden and Northfield appear to be on a collision course in the Great 8, but Erie and Pueblo East are both teams that already have major upheavals under their belts during the regular season, so they don’t will not be afraid of the road.

Golden won a three-point game in early December against Pueblo East, so the two teams know each other. “Freshman Alert!” Allen Acevedo scored 16 points for the Demons in this tournament match.

In the bottom half, Ladorian Havard leads Erie in points, rebounds and blocks, while he will see a lot of Nahsyah Bolar who averages an 18-point double-double, 11 rebounds for the Nighthawks. The cream will go up!

Go out and enjoy it, friends! The Sweet 16 is the last opportunity to go out and support our great student athletes in 5A in their neighborhood gymnasium and 4A only has a few games left before we appreciate the Coliseum for a finish that will not disappoint!
