The next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has only just begun, but curious fans are already considering the distant future when the next team of Avengers will assemble. After the post-credit scene in Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings has officially confirmed Shang-Chi as the Avenger, the internet has gone wild with speculation about who else Marvel Studios might have in mind for the superhero roster. One theory, in particular, makes some interesting points that might give an idea of what to expect.
Bustle’s Grace Wehniainen explains that deciphering the Avengers 5 the line-up is difficult because the definition of “Avenger” is not so clear in the MCU. Kevin Feige added to the confusion with a statement indicating the question of what it means to be an Avenger, as well as who funds the team and leads them, will be a lingering question in the context of future MCU projects.
While Marvel Comics suggests the Avengers are typically recruited, the MCU appears to have a gray area. The six originals from 2012 The Avengers may have been assembled by recruiting, but there have also been several times in the Infinity Saga where the “Avenger” label could be applied to any character fighting on the good side. In the case of Shang-Chi, Marvel Studios had already hinted at its future Avengers by marketing it as “Marvel’s New Avenger” even before the film’s release. But there was also a potential Avengers 5 clue in the Eternals trailer, in which Ikaris jokingly names himself the next team leader. Wehniainen says this latest example implies that any of the “overpowered good guys” can make the squad if they want to.
With that in mind, it can be assumed that all of the superheroes who have fought under the mantle of the Avengers could potentially be part of the new roster. Wehniainen begins with those who fought most closely alongside the original team before and after the events of Civil war: Hulk, Thor, War Machine, Hawkeye, Captain America (Sam Wilson), The Winter Soldier, Spider-Man, Ant-Man and Scarlet Witch. She then adds a few notable names that helped the Avengers vs. Thanos in End of Game: Doctor Strange, Wong, Valkyrie, Shuri, Okoye, Captain Marvel, The Wasp and Guardians of the Galaxy.
And these are just the existing superheroes. There are also a bunch of new names to consider, from solos like Moon Knight and She-Hulk to new teams like the Eternals and the highly anticipated Fantastic Four. Also, there will likely be some handovers between old and new characters (Natasha Romanoff to Yelena Belova, Hawkeye to Kate Bishop, etc.), which could affect things as well.
Of course, a Avengers 5 The movie shouldn’t be arriving anytime soon, as it’s far too early in Phase 4 to even know who or what the main threat will be. Feige himself recently stated that there must be a reasonable amount of time between End of Game to build a new saga before you start bringing everyone together.
The Avengers movies are now available on Disney Plus.
