by James Cameron Avatar the series has evolved over the years: from unprecedented success at the box office half-forgotten cultural artifact to the most anticipated follow-up of the year. The first reactions to Avatar: The Way of the Water indicate that the sequel definitely delivers, with a message becoming clear from early audience members: “Never bet against james cameron.”

One of the greatest cheerleaders in film is Pinocchio filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, who echoed one of preeminent philosophers of modern cinema when he tweeted, “I repeat: Avatar 2 – seeing it, you realize how long it’s been since you’ve seen a MOVIE-MOVIE (like that, in all caps).” Previously he had shared that the film is “a staggering achievement”, adding that it is “suffocating [sic] of majestic sights and thrills on an epic, epic scale. A master at the height of his powers…”

Cameron’s mastery is a frequent refrain for critics who have seen the film. Weekly entertainmentit is Yolanda Machado called the director a “master of technology” whose “directing is most precise here”. Drew Taylor of The envelope wrote that he was “overwhelmed” by The water path“The technical mastery and surprisingly intimate emotional reach. Vultureit is Wedge Ebiri said it was “Cameron’s sweetest, sweetest, most personal film ever.” Maybe even his most emotional. He revisits all of his greatest hits, but it’s still totally heartfelt. Ebiri added: “He will never leave Pandora. He loves this family.

“[It’s] an Avatar movie: slow start, big build, incredibly involving second act with a ton of world building and cool creatures to keep you happy, then an hour of emotionally sharp and crystal clear action to send you home full and happy,” he tweeted. Atlanticit is david sims. IndieWireit is David Ehrlich called the film “light years better than the first and easily one of the best theatrical experiences in centuries”, saying he wasn’t particularly keen on a Avatar sequel but now “can’t *wait* to see Avatar 3.”

There are a few reviews to be found amid the flattering praise. Story-wise, Machado wrote that the film “is just….dance with wolves and Save Willy for Generation Z! The long runtime was noted by several audience members (it “seems stretched to 3 hours and 10 minutes”, producer and reviewer Scott Mantz noted), while Empireit is Amun Warman tweeted that “a lot of storylines feel like they have to stop and start again, and the high frame rate was hit or miss for me.” Even in a largely positive reaction, Uproxxit is mike ryan joked that the film was “[maybe] too overwhelming,” because “Sometimes I would miss plot points because I was looking at a Pandora fish.

Fans can decide for themselves if the return to Pandora is worth the wait when the movie hits the big screen on December 16, 2022. But based on these impressions from the first wave of viewers, it looks like the hitmaker James Cameron has indeed made another success. .
