The Ferrari driver was forced to sit out the Saudi GP, where Oliver Bearman made a superb debut in his place, but Sainz was back to his best in Melbourne and won convincingly after retirement of polesitter Max Verstappen due to brake problems.

Sainz made his job outlook for 2025, when he will be replaced at Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton, without any difficulty in leading his local teammate Charles Leclerc in a 1-2 for the Scuderia as McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both led the only remaining Red Bull of Sergio Perez.

A race which had only 19 starters, with Logan Sargeant on the Williams bench, was missing both Mercedes at the finish as Hamilton was dramatically joined late by George Russell. A penalty given to Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso for erratic driving before Russell’s crash has sparked much debate.
