Mat Watson from Carwow is a very lucky man, who was able to drive some of the fastest cars in the world. However, its recent comparison video raises an important question: How does the Mk. 8 Volkswagen Golf R perform compared to the latest Audi S3?
Most of you know that the two vehicles are very close on paper with similar performance. Both come from the original 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines with the Audi developing 310 horsepower (231 kilowatts) and the VW producing 320 horsepower (239 kW). Each vehicle reduces power via all-wheel drive, with the S3 competing for 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque while the Golf R produces 310 pound-feet (420 Nm).
Very similar performance numbers aside, the Volkswagen was almost half a second faster in the 60 mph sprint – 4.1 seconds versus 4.5. Watson was visibly shocked after seeing such a stunning character, and we were equally in awe. Unfortunately, the video does not include the appropriate quarter-mile time, as the tests were carried out on public roads.
Quarter-mile disappointment aside, the braking test produced a slight role reversal, with the VW stopping at 45 meters (148 feet) and the Audi stopping at 43 m (141 feet) – both tests were carried out at 113 km / h. . We would have loved to see a 0-60-0 run between the two, but the test environment did not allow for such an experience.
Watson was torn between the hot hatch he preferred to have, but ultimately went with the Golf R. While the two vehicles produced very similar performance, he said the Volkswagen was a lot more fun to drive.
