Audi RS4 Competition lives up to its name against RS7 in drag racing showdown

Audi’s RS badge represents the pinnacle of a model’s performance capabilities. It graces a lineup of cars that are far from equal in price and power, but those huge differences aren’t as significant in a real-world race, like this one between the Audi RS4 and RS7.

The two both sport the coveted lettering, but they couldn’t be more different under the hood. The RS4 comes with a 2.9-liter V6 engine rated at 450 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, while the RS7 comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine rated at 630 horsepower and 627 pound-feet .

Besides its lighter curb weight, the RS4 has a small advantage in its Competition version: a reprogrammed gearbox for better gear changes and better launches.

Despite the considerable power difference, the less powerful RS4 was only 0.5 seconds slower to the quarter-mile finish line. It finished the race in 11.8 seconds, while the RS7 Performance did it in 11.3. That’s not a huge gap between the two, and the aftermarket scene could easily knock a few tenths off the RS4’s time.

Unfortunately, Audi does not offer the RS4 in the United States. But it’s hard to complain, as we enjoy the majority of the company’s sports range, including the RS3, RS5 and RS7. We can’t even complain about missing a car; Audi began selling the beautiful RS6 Avant in the United States in 2020.
