At least 174 people have been killed following a stampede at a football stadium in Indonesia.
The incident happened after home side Arema lost to bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya in East Java late on Saturday night.
The stampede occurred when police fired tear gas at supporters who had invaded the pitch.
This would then have sent thousands of people bounding towards the exits and many died, and hundreds more injured, in the resulting crash.
More than 300 people were reportedly rushed to hospital.
East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta told a press conference early on Sunday, “We have already taken preemptive action before finally firing tear gas as (fans) started to attack the police, acting haphazardly and setting fire to vehicles”.
The initial toll was around 130 dead, before an official announcement put the figure at 174 with 11 others seriously injured.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo said: “I deeply regret this tragedy and hope it is the last football tragedy in this country. Don’t let another human tragedy like this happen in the future.
“We must continue to uphold the sportsmanship, humanity and sense of brotherhood of the Indonesian nation.”
A number of Premier League clubs have sent messages of support to those affected.
Arsenal wrote: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the events in Malang at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia today. With everyone finding a connection through football, our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy.”
“Manchester United are deeply saddened by the tragedy in Malang, Indonesia,” the Red Devils said. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families and everyone affected.”
Liverpool said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the events at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, Indonesia. The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with everyone affected at this time.”
Man City added: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia. Our hearts go out to everyone involved.”
