At least 15 people have died and dozens have been injured when a Mexico City metro train derailed from a collapsed viaduct on Monday evening, authorities said.
The train collapsed towards the road, trapping at least one car under the rubble, authorities said.
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said a support beam gave way just as a train was passing through it.
In addition to the dead, at least 70 people were injured in the wreckage of metro line 12, the mayor said.
A crane was needed late Monday to help with the rescue efforts.
People were still aboard the suspended train, although it is not known whether they are alive, the mayor said.
“What happened in the metro today is a terrible tragedy,” Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard tweeted.
