Asus ROG Phone 3 could be a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Slayer – Tom’s Guide

It seems that the greatest danger to the dominance of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra as king of the Android hill is high-end gaming phones. And the Asus ROG Phone 3 could be there to destroy it.

A report from the Chinese technology site Mydrivers via Gizmochina indicates that, despite dramatic economic losses in 2018 and notable production delays caused by the coronavirus, the Taiwanese company will launch the Asus ROG Phone 3 in the third quarter of 2020.

We do not yet know much about the Asus ROG Phone 3. It is said that the device has a Snapdragon 865 processor and 5G capacity. It remains to be seen whether, like the previous version, the ROG Phone 3 will have a higher specification version of the 865 Plus on its high-end model. Arriving so late in 2020, this may be the case depending on the Qualcomm chip release schedule, but there are still too many unknowns – especially with the coronavirus epidemic in full swing around the world.

The flow Asus ROG Phone 2 is already quite the beast, a Snapdragon 855 Plus machine with a 6.59-inch AMOLED panel that already beat all phones last year at 120 Hz with a touch sampling frequency of 240 Hz On top of that, it has a 6000mAh monster battery to power all of this hardware.

We could reasonably expect to see all of these impressive specs tightened up in the ROG Phone 3. There is speculation on a screen with 144 Hz refresh to match an increase in game rendering performance.

The current version already offers impressive RAM and storage, with up to 12 GB and 1 TB respectively, so I don’t know how the hell this could be further improved. Perhaps a 16 GB option to compete with the high-end model S20 Ultra is in order.

One thing the ROG Phone 3 could improve on is the cameras, although professional gaming phones don’t really need the firepower of the sensor.

Asus might be able to add its Nintendo Switch type controllers – the ROG Kunai Gamepad – to the package (although that’s just my wish).

Hunting for the Galaxy S20 Ultra

The Asus ROG Phone 3 isn’t the only next-generation gaming phone to kill the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro – with its giant 7.1-inch screen, monster guts and low price – just announced earlier this month. This phone dwarfs the S20 Ultra’s 6.9-inch screen, while providing physical shoulder buttons that can be crucial for those looking for a high-performance gaming phone that could compete with the Nintendo Switch.

Because of its screen, high speed, and giant storage options, many consider the Galaxy S20 Ultra to be a potential machine for mobile gamers. It looks like Xiaomi and Asus are both ready to prevent this.
