Aston Martin seeks right of review for Alonso’s China F1 penalty

Alonso was given a 10-second sprint penalty and three penalty points on his license after colliding with Carlos Sainz during Saturday’s race.

The Spaniards were vying for third place when they collided at Turn 9, which caused the two-time world champion to suffer a puncture and lead to his retirement from the race. Sergio Perez took advantage of the incident to move into the top three.

The stewards decided to take action against Alonso “in accordance with the guidelines on driving standards”, but the Aston Martin driver was not convinced of his fault.

“At turn 7 I think we were tied, then at turn 8 I tried to go to the outside,” he said after the sprint. “But he opened the line not to give me any space, so on lap 9 I did the same thing he did on lap 8.

“I tried to go inside so as not to leave him any room on the line, but on lap 8 I opened so that we wouldn’t touch, and on lap 9 he didn’t open . So we touched each other.

The team will now have to provide new evidence to the stewards for them to consider changing their decision. A first hearing will take place on May 3 with the team bosses of Aston Martin and Ferrari to determine whether the evidence put forward by the British team justifies the examination by the stewards.

“It should be noted that this hearing will take place in two parts,” the sports commissioners wrote in their press release. “The first part will involve hearing evidence to determine whether there is any “material and relevant new material that was not available to the party seeking the review at the time of the relevant decision.”

“If the Stewards determine, in accordance with Article 14.3 of the FIA International Sporting Code, that such an element exists, a second part of the hearing will be convened at a time to be communicated. Any other “concerned party” may request authorization from the commissioners present for the second part of the hearing, if it is convened.
