Aston Martin: Alonso "very impressive" at the start of F1 testing in Abu Dhabi

Alonso was released by Alpine to ride an unbranded AMR22 in the Pirelli tire test following the Abu Dhabi GP, giving him a useful head start as he gets to know his new team.

He could race more in the 2022 car as Pirelli begins its 2024 tire testing program in the new year.

“It was very impressive, very impressive in how effectively it conveyed the messages,” Krack said of the outing in Abu Dhabi.

“It was direct at all times, and it was very friendly and open, transparent, I think both ways. We’re very happy with how the day went, really.

When asked to compare Alonso with his predecessor, Sebastian Vettel, Krack replied: “Different, yes, because they have different backgrounds. One is Latin, the other is German. It makes a big difference.

“But what they have in common is focus, focus on improvement, focus on progress, and also isolation of what moves us forward instead of perhaps being detailed. Some similarities, but also some differences.

Krack said it was already evident that Alonso would be a driving force for the team.

“I think with Fernando, I always hold up that photo from the Mexican Grand Prix about his frustration at not finishing seventh. It’s an example of dedication and drive.

“So if you have someone with that passion and that drive to win, I think he has an impact on the team, and we could definitely see that, how happy everybody was really happy to be. have this guy in the car.

“I think he maybe ignites another spark of his own passion and desire to win in the team.”

Krack hinted that Alonso could remain involved with Aston Martin even after his retirement from the cockpit: “We have already had some very good conversations with him. In my opinion, it can go beyond driving.

“Fernando who joined us has been a central part of the team, and we have to see how that will develop. But I think he can have a big role to play in the future of the team.”

Aston Martin technical director Dan Fallows agreed Alonso could make a significant contribution to the team’s progress.

“From a technical point of view, it is important that we have drivers who can give good feedback,” said Fallows.

“I don’t say positive comments, because that’s not always the case. But good feedback, and being able to describe how they feel in the car is very important to us.

“We are very lucky that Lance [Stroll] is very good in this respect too.

“I don’t think that when Seb left, we were missing something in particular.

“But we want to produce a car that is significantly better for next year, we want to see that progress and we need to make sure we have drivers who can make the most of it.

“As I said, with Lance I think we have a driver who can drive the car, it’s clear that Fernando has huge experience and has proven himself in that area as well. It’s a team of drivers very exciting.
