If you were one of the people who saw photos of Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon promoting their new Netflix romantic comedy Your place or mine and wondered why they looked like the most awkward red carpet couple ever, we may have the answer. It turns out that, like many new friends that have made in recent years, they haven’t spent much time together. At least not physically.
Although the stars didn’t directly address the embarrassing photos during their joint appearance on hello americathey revealed something that might explain it. Your place or mine it might be a romantic comedy, but it turns out the stars only filmed three scenes together.
For the majority of the film, the two leads communicated virtually, which is why they prepared for the film by having daily video calls. Kutcher said they spent time “building that chemistry and building that relationship and really becoming real friends” from a distance, which made filming the movie more comfortable. “A lot of the time when we were shooting one of us was just FaceTiming while the other was on set, it was only natural because we were already communicating that way,” he said. So if you saw these photos and thought that Kutcher and Witherspoon looked like two people who had never met before, you were sort of right.

They might be close to the screen, but you’d never tell from these photos. Even Mila Kunis, Kutcher’s wife, agrees. During a solo appearance on Today, Witherspoon revealed that Kunis actually made fun of the awkwardness. “She even emailed us last night,” the actor said, noting that she was friends with Kunis before working with Kutcher. “She says, ‘You look so awkward together on the red carpet. “” Quite Kunis’ understatement, but we’ll allow it.
