Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Gunners have a chance of winning the Premier League this season.
England’s thirteen-time champions are currently top of the league, with five straight wins and one defeat to their name after six games.
And Wenger – who now works as FIFA’s head of global football development – knows exactly how to guide a team to the Premier League trophy.
The Frenchman won three league titles with the Gunners during his tenure between 1996 and 2018, winning in 1998, 2002 and unbeaten as they secured another in 2004.
After exiting in 2018, however, the north London side did not finish top of the Premier League.
But with the season only weeks away, Wenger already believes this season could finally give Arsenal a chance to end the drought as no one else has come out on top yet.
“This season, from the start, there hasn’t been a completely dominant team and Arsenal have a chance [of winning the title] because the potential is there,” the 72-year-old said at the event promoting former Arsenal co-owner David Dein’s book.
The Gunners narrowly missed out on a place in the top four and therefore this season’s Champions League against north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur last season.
Now, however, Mikel Arteta – who captained the Gunners under Wenger – appears to have fired up his side to improve on their disappointing conclusion to the 2021/22 campaign.
“I hope they can do it, at least to be in the top four. Why not?” Wenger continued.
“I think you can’t even rule out the fact that they could fight for the title.”
Wenger praised his former club for recruiting well while continuing to improve their homegrown players.
The introduction of new signings such as former Manchester City stars Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have already improved the Gunners, with the pair’s Premier League-winning experience a welcome addition to the squad.
Of course, defending champions City are hot on the heels of Arsenal, a point behind on 14, and the addition of striker Erling Haaland – who has already scored 10 goals this season – will certainly make it difficult to fight for this title for Arsenal.
