“Turn off that Fox News shit, ’cause you’re about to die everybody.” It’s a real line that Ariana Grande sings in the new song “Just Look Up”. A bit of context is probably needed. The song, which also features Kid Cudi, is taken from the upcoming Netflix film Don’t look up, about the possible destruction of the earth by a comet, and presumably makes perfect sense in its context. Still, that movie didn’t come out until December 24, so in the meantime, the song exists in a world of its own. Just Ariana Grande treating her 60 million Spotify listeners to an existential bop about mass extinction. Pleasant.
Don’t look up is directed by Adam McKay and stars Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio alongside Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, and more. Grande and Cudi both have thriving film careers; she has just been cast in an adaptation of Nasty while he worked on both Bill and Ted face the music and TV series we are who we are.
