Apple iPhone 12: everything we know so far [Updated]
Forbes
039;nbsp; Continuing its much appreciated annual presentation on Apple’s iPhone plans, Samsung is its rival and major partner. As has been the case for several years now, the company has again used February to announce its next-generation screen, a screen that Apple has used in its iPhones since the company first adopted OLED technology with the iPhone X. In addition, the new owners of the Galaxy S20 will not be happy. 039;nbsp;
02/28 Update: Samsung has released more details on its new generation parts, which historically make Apple’s new iPhones each year. This time it’s RAM with Samsung announcing New generation LPDDR5 modules which are “improved” for 5G smartphones. Samsung says the modules offer up to 30% faster performance and 20% higher energy efficiency than previous generation memory, and Galaxy S20 buyers are not receiving this module. The twist here is that Samsung is announcing its new memory in quantities of 16 GB, significantly more than the iPhone 11 range (which uses up to 4 GB). That said, Apple is requesting custom orders for almost every aspect of its iPhones, so expect the iPhone 2020 lineup to support around 6 GB of RAM (50% more than last year). , but with performances that reproduce the latest gains from Samsung. Yes, Apple’s next generation smartphones have become even more attractive.
02/29 Update: in a new interview with Fox Business, Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed new optimism about the coronavirus, saying, “I feel like China has mastered the coronavirus. I mean, you look at the numbers, they’re going down by the day. And so I’m very optimistic there. “Cook says that, despite the continued spread of the virus outside of China,” we have reopened factories, so factories have been able to work under the conditions to reopen. They reopen. They’re also ramping up, and so I think of it as sort of a third phase of getting back to normal. And we’re in phase three of ramping mode. “Such positivity is crucial for iPhone fans given fears not only of the cancellation of the iPhone 9 event and a delay in launching, but of a ripple effect for all Apple projects, including iPhone 12. Cook has historically turned more toward conservative financial and business projections, so we shouldn’t dismiss his comments as mere marketing hyperbole. It was only the shot in the arm we needed.
“Samsung Display Company today unveiled an OLED screen optimized for 5G smartphones with new blue light emission and reduced power consumption,” the company said in an official statement. “Our OLED screen optimized for 5G takes the lead in the 5G era with its clear images, its distinguished designs, its economical energy consumption and its increasingly protective function for the eyes.”
Samsung hasn’t broken down all of these benefits, but it has revealed that the new screens will be 15% more energy efficient and emit less blue light than its previous generation panels and 70% less than LCD screens. And yes, you guessed it, the previous generation is what Samsung uses in its own brand (and extremely expensive) Galaxy S20 range (details). Also, given DisplayMate described Since the Galaxy S20’s screen is “visually indistinguishable from perfect,” we can expect its successor to be truly magnificent. 039;nbsp;
There is a potential curve ball. In order to reduce its dependence on Samsung, Apple has invested heavily in LG’s OLED factories. To date, LG is a master of larger OLED screens with its advanced TVs, but the results have been haphazard on smartphone screens. As such, the only way Apple will use LG screens in the iPhone 12 line is if they can match the new Samsung panels (in this case, there is nothing to worry about) or if they will be carried over for another year. 039;Nbsp;
Anyway, another piece of the iPhone 12 puzzle has been put together and an enticing image is brewing. In addition to its new generation screen, we know that the iPhone 12 will adopt the ProMotion screen technology with high refresh rate extract from the iPad Pro, deliver new screen sizes, come with an intriguing long range 3D camera, have a potentially competing MacBook Pro A14 chip, use 5G with custom Apple antennas and potentially even see a back for Touch ID. 039;nbsp;
Yes, Apple can fear increase iPhone prices in the back of all this technology but the increases are supposed to be smaller than some rivals. Could 2020 be the year when Apple combines advanced upgrades with (comparatively) good value? I have to admit that the signs are good. 039;Nbsp;
