Apple might not make games, but it does know how to monetize them. A Wall Street Journal report suggests the iPhone maker generates more video game revenue than the major platform owners.
According to the analysis, Apple earned $ 8.5 billion from video games in fiscal 2019, up $ 2 billion from the combined operating profit of Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Activision for the same period. .
The report also cites estimates from mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower, which says Apple’s gaming revenue could be even higher. According to Sensor Tower, Apple received $ 15.9 billion in App Store revenue in fiscal 2019, 69% of which is generated from games.
Apple itself, however, has maintained that the company has never tried to determine exactly how much the App Store generates or how profitable games are.
