Carol Surface joins Apple as the company’s first director of human resources, taking over human resources responsibilities from current head of retail, Deirdre O’Brien.
Apple is hiring a new HR manager
Apple hired Deirdre O’Brien in 2019 to take over people and retail as senior vice president of People + Retail. It was a role that placed her in charge of over 500 retail stores and over 70,000 employees.
According to a note shared by CEO Tim Cook and seen by Bloomberg, the human side of O’Brien’s role was given to a new director, the Director of Human Resources. Apple has hired Carol Surface from her previous role at Medtronic Plc to fill the role.
Chief People Officer is the name given by Apple to the head of human resources. With many Apple Stores unionized and employee complaints made public, the new recruit will certainly have their hands full.
Surface will report directly to Tim Cook and begin work in March. Apple’s leadership page has not been updated to reflect the change as of this posting.
