There have been a lot of iOS updates this year and Apple has continually surprised us, with major new features coming to the end of the cycle and smaller updates throughout the year.

But that’s something else. It looks like Apple is working on iOS 14.8. It is unprecedented.

I mean, even iOS 14.7 was unusual. While it is true that there was a .7 version on iOS 13, iOS 13.7 only landed in September, after the arrival of iOS 14, it was there for one purpose: to add the contact tracking for Covid, so not the same at all. .

Then there was iOS 14.7.1, which was a small update with one purpose.

But now, it seems, Apple is working on something else. While you might expect something like iOS 14.7.2 to fix any unexpected issues with 14.7.1, it’s something else.

That’s a whole number, iOS 14.8, at a time when iOS 15, already until its fifth version for developers, is only a matter of a few weeks. There has never been a .8 update before.

The information comes from mentions in Xcode, spotted by Twitter users, that the software is coming.

So why is this happening and what does it mean?

One of the changes introduced by Apple is a new choice. Users can update to the all new software, iOS 15, or can choose to stay on iOS 14 but most importantly still take advantage of security related software updates. This is a brilliant change, because it means that users can avoid the complications of adopting a new system until they are ready, while still enjoying total security.

Thus, higher version numbers are inevitable and can last a few weeks or months after iOS 15 comes into service.

As for what that means, well, we’ll have to wait and see. While security is front and center, I’m really not ruling out the possibility that new features will creep in as well. After all, since every iPhone that can run iOS 14 can also run iOS 15, Apple has no reason to restrict functionality only to new software.
