Apple invites some developers to try Swift Playgrounds 4 ahead of launch – MacRumors

Apple is working on an updated version of its Swift Playgrounds app, an educational tool designed to teach children and adults to use the Swift programming language first launched in 2016.

The new version of Swift Playgrounds was first announced at the Global Developer Conference in June, and Apple is now allowing select developers to beta test it before launch.

Developers who were invited had to sign a nondisclosure agreement to gain access, but one developer shared screenshots and details with 9to5Mac, giving us a quick overview of the application.

With Swift Playgrounds 4, developers will be able to submit their projects designed with the software directly to the App Store, allowing the creation of applications on the iPad. There will be a simple and easy to use interface to submit an app to ‌App Store‌ Connect without needing Xcode on Mac.

The app will allow those learning the code to preview and see changes in real time as they type, as described by 9to5Mac:

Swift Playgrounds 4 also allows users to preview and see changes in real time as they type. Live editing also works when the developer shares the project with someone else through iCloud Drive, so that multiple people can work on the same project at the same time. Users can even test the app in full screen, explore SwiftUI commands, search all files in a project, use quick online code suggestions, and easily switch between Swift Playgrounds and Xcode (or vice versa).

There are also quick access options to set app settings and get an app on the store with little hassle. App makers can, for example, use an out-of-the-box icon by choosing a color and icon, or uploading a custom icon that is automatically sized.

Currently, some of the features in Swift Playgrounds 4 require iPadOS 15.2, so there is a possibility that Swift Playgrounds 4 will be released when iPadOS 15.2 launches. It’s not yet clear when we can expect iPadOS 15.2, but Apple will likely launch it before the end of the year.
