Apple explains why second-generation AirPods Pro ear tips are incompatible with original AirPods Pro

Apple today explained why the new silicone tips for the second-generation AirPods Pro aren’t officially compatible with the original AirPods Pro.

In an updated support document, Apple said the original AirPods Pro ear tips have “a noticeably denser mesh” than the second-generation ear tips. Apple didn’t provide additional details, but mesh density could cause acoustic differences.

“Ear tips were designed specifically for their AirPods Pro generation, to deliver the most faithful audio experience,” the support document states. “Therefore, use the ear tips that came with your AirPods Pro. The AirPods Pro (1st Gen) ear tips have a noticeably denser mesh than the AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) ear tips.”

Despite mesh differences, the second-generation ear tips fit the original AirPods Pro, so they’re still physically compatible.

The second generation ear tips come in a new XS option, while the original ear tips remain available in small, medium and large only. Both generations of ear tips are available from Apple’s online store in sets of two for $7.99 in the US.

The new AirPods Pro will start arriving at customers and will launch in stores the next day. Early reviews of the new AirPods Pro were shared earlier today, offering a closer look at improvements in sound quality, active noise cancellation, battery life, and more. The second-generation AirPods Pro remain priced at $249.
