Foldable smartphones continue to grow in popularity, with Samsung’s line of foldable devices currently leading the pack. The Korean tech giant already has a huge lineup of call generators that split into two to make them easier to pocket. Although other manufacturers including HONOR, Google, Motorola, and OnePlus are all joining in on this revolution, Apple has been extremely quiet about a foldable iPhone, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work on the one -this.
According to a new report from The Information, it appears that the American company is developing two new iPhones with flexible screens. This technology could offer a clamshell-style design similar to Samsung’s ZFlip models. This would allow Apple fans to own a device with a giant screen, small enough to fit in skinny jeans.
If this news excites you, there’s some bad news because it doesn’t look like we’ll see a foldable iPhone anytime soon. Reports indicate that Apple is unlikely to launch these devices in 2024 or 2025 due to concerns about their ruggedness. Samsung has had issues in the past with broken screens and foreign objects entering the device via the hinge – it’s not something Apple will want to repeat. Speculation is also rife that Apple wants its foldable iPhone to be as thin as current models when closed and making things that thin clearly takes time.
In addition to looking at foldable smartphones, it has also been reported that Apple is considering launching an iPad that closes.
This device is believed to be around the same size as the iPad mini and offer an 8-inch screen when opened. Rumors suggest that Apple engineers are currently trying to find a way to minimize the creasing that affects some current foldable devices. If this issue is resolved, we could see this tablet arriving in 2026 or 2027.
Apple is notorious for only introducing new technology when it feels things are perfect, so watch this space.
Although a foldable phone/tablet is still a bit far away, British Apple fans have something else to look forward to.
The new Vision Pro headset should arrive on this side of the Atlantic in the coming months and will offer a whole new way of interacting with content.
There’s no official price or UK launch date, but it could be here before summer.
